SRG Challenge #1

Horizontal Rope Climbing Robot

Design, build, and test a robot that climbs/crawls along a horizontal rope of 5mm width. The distance in travel will be no less than 10ft.

Challenge starts June 4th, 2022, ends October 1st, 2022.

Skill Level: Introduction – Explore – Advance – Master

Guidelines:

  • The standard non-hazardous robotics rule applies*
  • No direct wheel on rope or pulleys
  • It’s a 5mm rope, keep it under 5-lbs(-ish).
  • Keep your robot shorter than 12″ in the axis of the rope.

This can be accomplished by all. Cardboard and hot glue robots are welcome. New-to-robotics folks can bend any and all rules with exception to the non-hazardous rules as they’re learning… just make something. Experienced builders can find a challenge by practicing advanced skills. This is a collaborative effort, so we welcome questions and solicitation of help at the SnoCo Robotics Group meetings. Group entries are welcome. You can acquire a sample of the rope for testing at an in-person meeting.

All who participate will be awarded a makerspace-made trophy or certificate if we know they’re coming ahead of time and have attended at least one club meeting in person or on Zoom. You are competing against the challenge not the participants… be creative, not competitive. There will be no timing or measurement of travel. Any awards will be based on your build, not performance, i.e. Rube Goldberg award, etc. If you want to ship your robot to compete while you watch remote: contact Chas.

The challenge last four months. The extended time allows the flexibility for people to enter at any point and potentially make more than one style of robot. The SRG group will put aside time during the monthly meeting for collaboration and mentoring.
